Definition Urban Ecology

If in an environment, an organism thrives, it is essentially an ecosystem for itself. This ecosystem includes various factors which help the organism not only survive and sustain life but also reproduce and increase. The study of such environments with respect to the organism is the called ecology. The scale of the organism which we study, changes the ecological setting. As Urban Designers, the scale we are most interested in is the one which affects human settlements and landscape.

Considering the context of a city, urban ecology is the study of interaction of humans and other living organisms in the urban ecosystems. It focuses on human dominated landscapes where we are perceived as fundamental influences of the ecosystem as well as other components of the urban ecosystems. The relationships and dynamic interests of all such components are essential in understanding how they work together, helping us design better sustainable urban complexes and ecosystem.
